Track 2. Cornea

The cornea is the translucent part of the eye that covers the anterior portion of the eye. It covers the pupil, iris, and anterior chamber (fluid-filled inside of the eye). Its function is to refract, or bend, light. It is composed of proteins and cells. It does not contain blood vessels. Some of the blood vessels may cloud the cornea and prevent it from refracting light properly and adversely affect vision. The cornea inclines to repair itself quickly from minor abrasions but deeper abrasions may cause scars to form on the cornea that causes the cornea to lose its transparency, leading to visual impairment.

Cornea displaces depending on the disease that is causing vision problems. For example, Fuchs’ dystrophy only have a problem with the back layer of the cornea and require single cell layer from donor cornea in a procedure known as DMEK.  Others conditions such as Keratoconus, the disease only affects the front part of the cornea, only that diseased portion is replaced in a procedure known as DALK. These two advanced surgical procedures are more sophisticated and provide much faster recovery than a standard full thickness transplant called as Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK) where all layers of the cornea are removed and changed with donor tissue.

Track 3. Diagnostic and treatment of eye cancer

Eye cancer is a term used to define many types of tumors that can occurs in various parts of the eye. Eye cancer occurs when healthy cells in or around the eye change and grow uncontrollably, forming a mass called a tumor. High-throughput sequencing is helping to deeply understand the cancer genome, and the mechanisms that cause tumor progression and affect treatment response. The NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) technology is used for tumor profiling and assess signalling pathways within the tumor. The gene changes that make eye cancer cells, are different from normal cells and play an important role in treating eye melanomas, lymphomas, and other eye cancers in the future. There are different types of biological therapies to extravagance eye cancers.

The NITRO trial a type of biological therapy called ranibizumab for uveal melanoma. Ranibizumab is a monoclonal antibody. It works as targeting a protein on the cancer cell called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).

Track 10. Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness. It is a condition that cause group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve and vision loss. The most common type is open-angle glaucoma with less common types is closed-angle glaucoma and normal-tension glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma develops slowly over time and there is no pain. Closed-angle glaucoma can present gradually or suddenly may involve severe eye pain, blurred vision, mid-dilated pupil, redness of the eye, and nausea. Vision loss from glaucoma, once it has occurred, is permanent.

Variations of OAG are primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), pigmentary glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma, secondary glaucoma and congenital glaucoma.

Variations of closed angle glaucoma are acute angle closure glaucoma, chronic angle closure glaucoma, and neovascular glaucoma.Most of the people not knowing that they have glaucoma. It has no early symptoms or pain.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, glaucoma affects 2.2 million people in the United States, and the number is increase to 3.3 million by 2020 as the U.S population ages.

Track 12: Neuro optometry

Most of the people know Optometry that deals with the eyes but relatively few are aware of Neuro-Optometry and Behavioral Optometry which are extended studies of Optometry. There are more than 1 million people sustain traumatic brain injuries each year. Following a brain injury, there is often a disruption in communication between the eyes and the brain. Neuro-optometry is a special field of vision care that combines neurology and optometry to assess how the brain processes information sent from the eyes.

Neuro-optometrist is a person who may have practiced brain injury, stroke, double vision balance and mobility issues, and loss of one eye, light sensitivity, post trauma vision syndrome, or visual midline shift syndrome. Advance field of neuro science and medicine is brain imaging technology. It is an ability to see inside and read a human brain, the ethical and social implication of neuroimaging grow ever greater, shaped by both capabilities of the technology itself.

Track 13. Ophthalmic instruments

An optical instrument either processes light waves that can enhance an image for viewing, or analyzes light waves that regulate one of a number of characteristic properties. Telescope is the first optical instruments were used for magnification of distant images, and microscopes used for magnifying very tiny images. These instruments have been greatly improved and stretched into other portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The binocular device is generally a compact instrument for both eyes designed for mobile use. Camera could be considered AS optical instrument, with the pinhole camera and camera obscura being very simple examples of such devices.

Track 15. Pediatric and binocular vision

Problems with eye focusing and vision often lead to symptoms such as headaches or eyestrain andthat can cause serious problems such as lazy eye or non-use of one eye. These problems  found in individuals of all ages. The Binocular Vision Service provides complete evaluation of vision functions and offers a wide variety of treatment and management options for adults and for children. Vision therapy is designed to improve various visual problems through eye exercises. The goal of vision therapy is to teach or reinforce visual skills under controlled conditions. The movements reinforce visual skills in an effort to improve vision and to relieve symptoms. Advances in Pediatric Research publishes original research articles with a potential impact on the fields of neonatology, pediatrics, and adolescent medicine.

Track 16. Retina

Retina is the third and thin inner membranous lining at the back of the eye which is a light-sensitive layer of tissue. The eye optics creates an image of the visual world on the retina, which perform same function as the film in a camera.

Innovation in laser treatment was tapped as one of the most exciting developments for the specialty of retina in 2014. Now lasers are used less often to treat diabetic macular edema and age-related macular degeneration. There are some progresses are ongoing in laser technology that redefine how we view laser treatment.

In past, the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System is another achievement. The device received FDA approval in 2013, and the first successful implantations were performed at the Kellogg Eye Center of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, early in 2014. Both patients had retinitis pigmentosa.

Implantation of this device is very promising, because it allows patients to have better quality of life and is able to perform activities of daily living.

Track 17. Technique used to examined eye problem

Track 18. Vision screening

Vision screening is an efficient and profitable method used to identify children with visual impairment or eye conditions that are lead to vision loss.  Vision screening is new efficient and cost effective than a complete examination on every child. About 2 to 4% of children have an eye problem that requires treatment, so it is not practical to perform a comprehensive eye examination on every child.  Some difficulties are missed on a one-time comprehensive eye examination, so it is preferable to have several screenings performed over time. A new report published in the Journal of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) describes the effectiveness of a new computer-based vision-screening test, the Jaeb Visual Acuity Screener (JVAS). It is right for use in schools and pediatrician’s offices.
